Resistance of Commercial Melon Cultivars to Isolates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis

Fusarium wilt, caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis, is one of the most important diseases in melon (Cucumis melo) cultivation and causes plant death and significant yield losses. This study was conducted to determine the resistance of commercial melon cultivars to F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis. Based on pathogenicity of the fungus in 4 cultivars, ‘Charentais-T’, ‘Charentais-Fom1’, ‘Charentais-Fom2’, and ‘MR-1’, race of seven isolates of F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis was determined. Among them, the number of race 0, race 1, and race 2 were 3, 2, and 2, respectively, but race 1,2 was not observed. KACC 43207 (race 0), GR (race 1), and KACC 43206 (race 2) were selected for further study. By using scalpel inoculation method, resistance of 22 commercial melon cultivars were investigated to the three isolates. All tested cultivars showed highly susceptible or resistant responses, whereas moderately resistant cultivar was not observed. Among them, three cultivars were highly susceptible to all fungal isolates. The other cultivars showed strong resistance to KACC 43207 and GR, but were severely susceptible to KACC 43206. Among the resistant cultivars, only four were previously reported as resistant to F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis without race determination and the other 15 cultivars were considered non-resistant. Taken together, most of the resistant melon cultivars to Fusarium wilt were resistant to F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis races 0 and 1 in Korea. It is likely that these cultivars contain Fom-2, a single dominant resistance gene to F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis.
